A closed circuit television (CCTV) is the use of  video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place.  A CCTV camera may be used to observe places or people from a control room. Modern CCTV system use digital technology such as motion detection, which will only selectively record when movement occurs within the video frame, or a specific area within a picture. CCTV pictures are normally timecoded so a specific event can be easily replaced. Today nearly all CCTV systems are digital using hard drive storage.

In the U.S it is common for CCTV to record both video and audio, and in other countries privacy laws prevent audio being recorded.
