The real-time protocol (RTP) defines a standardised packet format for delivering audio and video over  telephony networks. RTP is used in communication and entertainment systems that involve streaming media.

RTP is always coupled with the term codec, which determines the quality and bandwidth used by the RTP stream.

RTP is based on the connectionless UDP protocol, and has no mechanisms for error checking or recovery, it is the responsibility of the underlying transport layer to provide a QoS (Quality of Service) guarantee for the RTP stream.
