Access Point Name, (APN) used in GPRS mobile networks as a routing gateway for mobile phone packet data. The APN controls which services a mobile user has access to. When a mobile user initiates a PDP context request (Packet Mobile Connection) , the subscribers APN is sent with the request and if sucessful is mapped to the requested service.

The Blackberry service is an example where a global Blackberry APN is established for routing traffic to RIMS gateway servers, which in turn connect to Enterprise (BES) servers or internet email (BIS).
