A call detail record (CDR) is a file containing information about recent system usage such as the identities of sources, the identities of destinations, the duration of each call, the amount billed for each call, the total usage time in the billing period, the total free time remaining in the billing period and the running total charged during the billing period.

To save space CDR records are often encoded in a highly compressed manner, such as ASN.1 Base64. A decoder utility is required to decode the records into usable text. Call Detail Records which are generated by mobile switching centers are used for applications such as fraud detection and revenue assurance.
